Who We Help

It is our mission to assist the families of children with cardiac defects. Often times the children are sent out of our area for treatment. Many of the families cannot endure the added burden of travel expenses and this is where we come in.

We receive referrals from Children's Medical Services. In Florida patients may be sent to one of five locations:

Jacksonville - 380 Miles- 8 1/2 hour drive Gainesville - 450 Miles- 7 hour drive Miami - 700 Miles- 14 hour drive Tampa - 450 Miles- 9 hour drive Orlando - 450 miles - 7 hour drive

The cost for the families to travel to be with there sick child can become very expensive. At Heart to Heart we believe that the families should be with their child in their time of need. We try to ease the journey for these families by assisting with travel expenses.

Did you know:
The average round trip for one of our families is 470-940 miles. That's more than $300 in gas. If the family does not have their own transportation, it is $35 per day to rent a car. The average hotel stay is $55 a night and the average cost of food is $21 per day for an adult.

	Veronica Guevana D.O.B. 11/15/05 Veronica was born with congenital heart defeat. At 4 months of age she needed surgery to repair her defeat. Heart to Heart of Pensacola was contacted on her behalf by Childrens Medical Services. We provided money for her transportation and food, along with a pre-paid phone card, and diapers for the baby. We were able to provide this assistance though donations made to us and proceeds from the Heart to Heart Thrift and Bargain Store.
	Lewis "Shannon" Thompson DOB: 5/02/03 Shannon was born with a severe congenital heart defeat. As a result of his defeat, he's traveled many times to Shands Hospital in Gainsville, Florida for surgeries and heart catheterizations. Heart to Heart has assisted the family with money to cover lodging, transportation and food on several occasions while they have been in Gainsville.
Without financial donations and proceeds from our fundraising efforts, these families would not only be worried about their child's health but also with the financial burden associated with the situation.
